FSU MIDDLE EAST CENTER TO HOST GUEST LECTURE BY EGYPTIAN DIPLOMAT HAMDI SALEH

The Middle East Center at Florida State University has scheduled a free, public lecture by Egyptian government official and Middle East expert Hamdi Saleh, who will discuss “The Transformation of Arab Politics.” Saleh’s lecture will take place:

THURSDAY, OCT. 30
3:30 P.M.
ROOM 009, DIFFENBAUGH BUILDING
FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY

Saleh served in the Egyptian government from 1971 to 2005, most recently as ambassador to Mozambique and Swaziland in 2004-2005. He also served as Egypt’s ambassador to Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica from 2000 to 2003, and was his nation’s undersecretary of state for information and policy planning in 2003-2004.

Saleh’s career has underscored the interactions among four major domains -- government, academia and research, journalism and media, and advocacy of a dynamic civil society -- as a conduit to participatory democracy. He has been a contributor to the Los Angeles Times, the Christian Science Monitor, the Middle East Times and Al Ahram.

Saleh graduated from Cairo University with a bachelor’s degree in political science, later receiving another bachelor’s degree in international finance from Ain Shams University in Cairo. These were followed by two master’s degrees, one in international affairs from Johns Hopkins University and the other in public administration from Harvard University’s Kennedy School. Saleh received his doctorate in international affairs in 1987 from Harvard.
