A prominent scholar and writer on the topic of comparative religious ethics will speak at Florida State University this week as the Department of Religion hosts its 2008 Bristol Lecture on Ethics. Aaron Stalnaker of Indiana University will discuss “Confucian Democracy and the Question of Deference” in a free public lecture that is scheduled for:

FRIDAY, OCT. 24
3 P.M.
BROAD AUDITORIUM
CLAUDE PEPPER CENTER, 636 W. CALL ST.

Stalnaker is an associate professor in the Department of Religious Studies and the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Indiana University, where he writes and teaches about comparative religious ethics, focusing on Chinese and Western thought. His first book, “Overcoming Our Evil: Human Nature and Spiritual Exercises in Xunzi and Augustine” (Georgetown University Press, 2006), is a comparative study of different models of moral and religious self-transformation. His current research concerns the ethics of hierarchy and political implications of Confucianism.
