FSU TO CELEBRATE GRAND OPENING OF PSYCHOLOGY BUILDING

Florida State University officials will celebrate the grand opening of a new building for psychology -- one of the university’s oldest academic departments -- that houses its offices, laboratories and classrooms under one roof for the first time in decades. The Oct. 10 celebration will include a dedication ceremony for the 9,000-square-foot Stan and Paula Warmath Courtyard located at the center of the building.

The second phase of contruction of the $56 million, 103,000-square-foot building was completed in July. Construction for the first phase of the building began in 2004 and was completed in 2006. Altogether, the four-story building’s three wings house 49 research laboratories, administrative and faculty offices and a 220-seat auditorium. The new building also is home to the Psychology Clinic and the Florida Center for Reading Research.

The building’s courtyard is named in honor of the psychology department Director of Facilities and Operations Stan Warmath and his wife, Paula, who have made several generous gifts to support the research and teaching missions of the department and enhance the beauty of the courtyard. The courtyard features benches that honor the department’s past chairs and emeritus professors and engraved bricks with the names of the department’s doctoral degree graduates.

Participants in the grand opening celebration and dedication ceremony include Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Lawrence G. Abele; psychology department Chair Janet Kistner; and Stan Warmath. The ceremony will be held:
