CONTACT: Joy Beech, (850) 644-6771; <JBeech@admin.fsu.edu> Sept. 17, 2008 FSU TO HOLD DEDICATION CEREMONY FOR NEW MORCOM AQUATIC CENTER A dedication ceremony for the new $10.5 million Morcom Aquatic Center will be hosted by Florida State University President T.K. Wetherell on: SATURDAY, SEPT. 20 Russ and Genie Morcom provided the leadership gift that enabled the building of the facility. Russ is an FSU alumnus, Circle of Gold recipient and FSU Foundation Board of Trustees member and served as the chairman of Seminole Boosters from 2006 to 2008. The Morcom Aquatic Center was built to provide training and competition arenas for FSU athletes, who formerly shared the Leach Center facilities with the general student population. Divers had to drive to Moultrie, Ga. to practice. The new facility includes an NCAA-compliant competition pool (50 meters x 25 yards), dive pool (75 feet x 60 feet x 17 feet deep), separate warming spa, and dry-land training facility. Additionally, there is a 10,000-square-foot administration building housing locker rooms and offices named for former FSU swimmers who made donations, and a separate support building for equipment and chemicals. To give students maximum flexibility, the pools can be reconfigured for long-course, short-course and water polo. The dry-land training equipment includes trampolines, harnesses/pulleys and gymnastics mats for training out of water. Dive facilities include both fixed platform and springboards. The dive tower has fixed platforms at one, three, five, 7.5 and 10 meters. Platforms are wide enough to accommodate synchronized diving and include custom fabricated flared handrails to increase diver performance and safety. Tours, a swimming and diving exhibition and brunch will immediately follow the dedication. The event is invitation-only but open to the press. # # # LLT Building Corporation managed the construction of the Morcom Aquatic Center, which was designed by Emo/Architects, Inc. of Tallahassee. |
