Police Department Press Release June 2, 2008 Contact: Major Jim Russell, (850) 644-2900 FSU POLICE CONDUCT BIKE SAFETY ENFORCEMENT WAVE TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- As part of the FSUPD Bicycle Education, Enforcement, and Pedestrian Program (BEEPP), campus law enforcement officers are concentrating on traffic enforcement related to bicycle safety June 2-16. FSUPD studies have shown that about 27 percent of crashes with injury on campus involve a bicycle. “Officers will be concentrating on bicycle violations, and on infractions by motorists who violate bicyclists’ rights of way”, said Major Jim Russell, Assistant Chief at FSUPD. “This enforcement campaign is meant to reinforce the fact that both motorists and cyclists have rights and responsibilities when using the roadway. The keys are safety and civility on the road.” “The FSU campus is densely populated with cars, bicycles, and pedestrians”, said FSU Police Chief David Perry. “It is important for people traversing the campus to stay alert at all times for one another, and above all, drive and ride with care.” In addition to enforcement, the police department will continue its educational drives, to include providing free safety equipment to bicyclists, such as lights and reflective gear. ### |
