COLLEGE OF EDUCATION OFFERS CAMP TO ENHANCE WRITING SKILLS

Florida State University College of Education is hosting the Third Annual Young Writers’ Camp to provide rising sixth- through ninth-graders the opportunity to explore literary genres, sharpen their writing skills and even publish their own pieces. The camp will be held at Florida State University Schools, 3000 School House Road, Tallahassee, and is divided into two sessions:

  • June 16-20: for rising sixth- and seventh-graders
  • June 23-27: for rising eighth- and ninth-graders

This year’s camp will feature young-adult fiction writer Adrian Fogelin, author of “Crossing Jordan,” “The Sorta Sisters,” “My Brothers’ Keeper,” “The Big Nothing,” and “Sister Spider Knows All.” Fogelin will work with campers in both age groups. Throughout the camp, students and teaching consultants from the Florida State University Writing Project will meet to explore various aspects of writing. Working in whole-group settings, small supportive feedback groups, breakout sessions and individually, students and consultants will develop their own and each other’s work, helping to ready it for publication. Each session will culminate in an open house, where students will have the opportunity to share their work and experiences with invited guests.

Space is limited and is reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. Applicants must submit an original writing sample. For an application or more information, contact Sharilyn Steadman at (850) 644-2959 or <steadman@coe.fsu.edu>.
