FSU COLLEGE OF EDUCATION OFFERS CAMP TO ENHANCE WRITING SKILLS

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- For the second consecutive year, the Florida State University College of Education is hosting its Young Writers' Camp to provide rising sixth- through 10th-graders the opportunity to develop their writing skills. The camp will be held at Florida State University Schools (Florida High) and is divided into two sessions:

* July 9-13: for rising sixth- and seventh-graders
* July 16-20: for rising eighth-, ninth- and 10th-graders

Each morning for five consecutive days, students and teaching consultants from the Florida State University Writing Project will meet to explore various aspects of writing. Working in whole-group settings, small supportive feedback groups, breakout sessions and individually, students and consultants work to develop their own and each other's work, helping to ready it for publication. Each session will culminate in an open house, at which students have the opportunity to share their work and experiences with invited guests.

Interested students must apply by Monday, May 21. Applicants must submit an original writing sample. For more information or to obtain an application, call Sharilyn Steadman, an assistant professor in FSU's department of middle and secondary education and co-director of the FSU Writing Project, at (644) 2959 or e-mail her at steadman@coe.fsu.edu.
